The Udaan initiative, grounded in the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009 and aligned with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, has played a vital role in strengthening education governance at the village level. Through trained Edu-Leaders, it has activated School Management Committees (SMCs) to enable meaningful community participation—especially from marginalised groups—in school monitoring, planning, and decision-making. This has led to improvements in access to entitlements, infrastructure, teacher accountability, and efforts to reduce dropouts. Building on these gains, Udaan now seeks to expand beyond compliance and basic service delivery toward a broader vision of holistic learning that includes life skills, creativity, well-being, and civic values.

In its new phase, Udaan aims to reposition SMCs as drivers of both quality education and holistic child development. Edu-Leaders will support communities in reimagining schools as vibrant learning space —promoting libraries, arts, environmental activities, health initiatives, and integration of local knowledge systems. With a strong equity lens, the initiative will ensure inclusive participation of marginalized communities while strengthening capacity, institutional linkages, and policy advocacy. Ultimately, Udaan envisions education as a shared, community-driven process that nurtures well rounded, empowered citizens while remaining rooted in democratic governance and accountability. Currently, Udaan works in 4 blocks of 2 districts, Panchmahal & Chotaudaipur. Formerly, Udaan has worked in 7 districts across Gujarat.
